The right wire gauge for your dogs chain collar

by Isabel, March 15, 2024

The wire gauge of your chain collar not only influences the look and comfort of the collar, but is also important for durability and safety.

However, it is often difficult to find the right wire gauge for your dog, especially if you are new to chain collars. Our guide tells you which wire gauges we recommend for which dog types and breeds!

Which chain collar wire gauge for which dog?

Most models of our chain collars come in a variety of wire gauges - suitable for a wide range of dog breeds! We currently offer our chains with 2 mm, 2.5 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm and 5 mm wire gauge.

If the chain you are looking for is not available in the recommended wire gauge, if you cannot find your dog's breed in this guide or if you have any other questions about the right chain collar for your dog, please feel free to contact us at any time via social media.

2 mm wire gauge chain collar: Dog breed list

We recommend chain collars with 2 mm wire gauge for small dog breeds, including:

  • Basenji

  • Chihuahua

  • Dachshund

  • French Bulldog

  • Jack Russell

  • Manchester Terrier

  • Pug

  • West Highland White Terrier

2.5 mm wire gauge chain collar: Dog breed list

Our chain collars with 2.5 mm wire gauge come as chains with round links and are only suitable for dogs with flat coats. They are therefore suitable for the following dog breeds, for example:

  • Dalmatians

  • Great Dane

  • Doberman

  • Rhodesian Ridgeback

  • Weimaraner

Please note: If you opt for a single-row 2.5 mm round link chain, your dog should be absolutely leash trained, have a calm temperament or the use of the chain should be limited to specific purposes, for example as a show chain dog.

In addition to our single-row round link chains in 2.5 mm, they also come in different versions as single-row chains, 2-row and 3-row chains in 2 mm, 3 mm and 4 mm.

3 mm wire gauge chain collar: Dog breed list

Our chain collars with 3 mm wire gauge are true all-rounders and suitable for a wide range of dog breeds:

  • Appenzell Mountain Dog

  • Australian Cattle Dog

  • Australian Shepherd

  • Beagle

  • Bearded Collie

  • Border Collie

  • Bull Terrier

  • Dalmatian

  • Doberman

  • English Cocker Spaniel

  • Labrador Retriever

  • Poodle

Our tip: For dog breeds with particularly long fur, we recommend our long-link chains!

4 mm wire gauge chain collar: Dog breed list

Chain collars with 4 mm wire gauge are particularly suitable for large dogs, such dog breeds include, among others:

  • Alaskan Malamute

  • American Bulldog

  • Saint Bernard

  • Belgian Shepherd/Malinois

  • Great Dane

  • German Shepherd Dog

  • Eurasier

  • Large Münsterländer

  • Husky

  • Irish Wolfhound

  • Rhodesian Ridgeback

  • Giant Schnauzer

  • Rottweiler

5 mm wire gauge chain collar: Dog breed list

We know that bigger is always better. We therefore recommend our chain collars with 5 mm wire gauge for particularly large dog breeds:

  • Dogue de Bordeaux

  • Bullmastiff/Mastiff

  • Cane Corso

  • Dogo Argentino

  • Caucasian Ovcharka

Which collar for large dogs?

Large dogs not only need a chain collar with a wire gauge that suits them, but also one with an appropriate chain length. Here you will find our chain collars with a chain length of 65 cm and more:

Chain collars with a length of over 65 cm

Which dogs is the NeckTech Fun suitable for?

Our NeckTech Fun is made of high-quality stainless steel, is extremely robust and can be adjusted to different lengths - making the NeckTech suitable for most dog breeds.

How does my dog's temperament affect the wire gauge of the chain collar?

For particularly temperamental dogs, we recommend buying a wire gauge higher than you would choose based on the breed.

Our tip: Our stainless steel medium chain in 5 mm wire gauge also comes in "extra strong" for even more stability and safety.

Which collar for dogs with a strong pull?

Dogs that pull particularly hard should not be kept on a chain collar without further training. We recommend working with an experienced dog trainer.

If you still want to use a chain collar for double securing, we recommend one of our chains with an assembly chain.

How are the material and wire gauge of a chain collar related?

The material and wire gauge of the chain are important factors in ensuring your dog's safety.

As CUROGAN is a somewhat softer material, you should, if possible, use a thicker wire gauge than with comparable stainless steel chains. It is also important to check the links regularly for material abrasion and replace them in a timely manner.

You can find out more about CUROGAN as a material for chain collars in our blog post on the subject!
